ONCE INSIDE THE INN, Hugh glanced mournfully at his abused Hessians and then at the people barring his way. The foyer was as busy as the street.

From somewhere in the back, a man shouted, “My lord!”

Like the Red Sea parting, people stepped aside.

Aristocracy carried weight among all levels of society. Seeing the wary gazes turn in his direction, he stiffened his back and decided that, minus the pigs, he preferred the pleasant company of humans when they were unaware of his status as either warlock or earl.

The innkeeper hurried over. “My lord, is Miss Bryght with you?”

Hugh snapped his head toward the speaker. “She is either upstairs in her chamber or in the private parlor I ordered be readied.”

The man stepped closer and his fetid breath warmed Hugh’s ears as he whispered, “My lord, the maid I procured to assist her said Miss Bryght came downstairs but she never joined your party.”

“Don’t be daft.” Hugh pushed the man aside and rushed along the corridor. He barged into the parlor the innkeeper had taken him to inspect earlier and found his mother, alone and pacing.

“Hugh, thank heavens you’re back. Is Miss Bryght with you?”

“No.” He gulped past a swollen throat. “We must find her.”

He spun, ready to search every room in this inn.

“Please don’t leave me alone again, Hugh.”

He turned back and found her near tears. His heart squeezed as it had the day he left home at seven years of age. She’d clung to him then as if she’d never let him go.

After a slight hesitation, he held out his left arm, palm up.

A smile broke out on her worried face and she ran to take his silent offer.

Hugh gave instructions for the innkeeper to send servants to all parts of the inn. “Don’t miss a single room.”

Once the worried man left to do as ordered, Hugh asked his mother, “Where’s your maid?”

“She wasn’t feeling well. I told her to rest in my room with Caden. Where could Miss Bryght be?”

“Probably in her chamber.” He sent a mental note to Atalie. Find Miss Bryght!

They rushed along the corridor and had reached the stairway when Atalie appeared on the landing above.

She’s not up here.

He took his mother upstairs anyway. “Atalie says Miss Bryght’s not in her room. Since I can search faster on my own, I want you to stay in your room with your maid and Caden.”

“Hugh, I fear for her life.” Her words mirrored his concern. “This is all my fault, Hugh. I’m the one who suggested to His Royal Highness that she should travel north with you. If she’s been harmed, I shall never...”

“I will find her.”

He opened her door and led her inside. Caden immediately barked and ran to them.

“Silence,” he said and the dog quieted with a little whine.

His mother picked Caden to cuddle while Hugh went around the chamber casting spells on windows and the doorways to prevent anyone entering without his express permission. He’d used this spell on his rooms in London. Tried and tested, he was confident it would protect his mother while he was away on his search.
